St Teresas Gardens during the 1980s

On Friday, February 27th 2015, the Irish daily newspapers reported that, following years of planning, and previously failed regeneration attempts, the demolition of the St. Teresas Gardens flats complex, Donore Avenue, Dublin, had commenced. On reading these reports I was reminded that the late Paul Humphrey (1958-2009), who worked as a community worker in the flats complex during the 1980s, gave me a folder of black and white photographs some years ago. The photographs were taken and developed by young people and others who were involved in community projects during 1984-85. Paul discovered the photographs during a clean-out of a local community premises and decided to remove and store them for use “sometime in the future”. The original stock of photos had already been well depleted and Paul believed it important to preserve some visual record of the period. On reading the newspaper reports about the demolition I decided to retrieve these photographs, and I put a selection onto a Youtube video.
