Community organisations and the media

Cullen, B. (1989) Community Organisations and the Media: A guidebook to using the media for community and voluntary organisations in Ireland, Dublin: Combat Poverty Agency, 1989

This guidebook contains information of assistance to community groups in terms of understanding and using the media. It provides detailed information of types of media and also advice on how community groups can most effectively use the media. The Combat Poverty Agency commissioned the guidebook because it considered the media important for increasing public awareness of poverty and community related issues and that often local groups can lack good information and advice on how to use the media. It was also concerned that community groups are often at the receiving end of negative publicity and they should have the capacity to respond to negative stories when these arise. Although the guidebook was produced prior to the advent of social media and related technologies, many of its basic suggestions for influencing the media continue to have application in contemporary times.
